The Best Ever Sugar Cookies
Don't sugar cookies just make you happy? I love to just look at them. Don't get me wrong, I love to just eat them too! Sugar cookies are so universal. You can customize them for just about any holiday or occasion. I've heard that collecting cookie cutters can be addicting and I can see why. I have a rather large collection myself, used mainly by my kids for play dough.
With Valentine's Day coming up I thought it would be fun to make some heart shaped cookies. I had some leftover bead-like sprinkles from Christmas and thought they would be a perfect outline for the hearts. I got this recipe from my mother-in-law. She has passed on loads of great recipes that I will be posting in the future. These have a great flavor to them. They are more on the softer side which I really prefer. The sugar glaze will dry hard after icing. Just let them sit for a while before stacking.
Sugar Cookies
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. baking powder
2 Tbsp. orange juice
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
Mix first six ingredients with mixer until fluffy. Gradually pour in flour until well mixed. Chill in the refrigerator until firm enough to roll, about an hour. Preheat oven to 400 F. Roll out dough until 1/4 thick, the thicker the better. Cut out shapes and place on silpat lined baking sheet.
Bake for about 8-10 minutes. Do not over bake. Let cool on cooling racks and frost with the sugar glaze and add sprinkles if desired.
Sugar Glaze
2 cups powdered sugar
4 tsp. light corn syrup
4 tsp. milk
food coloring
Mix all together until desired consistency adding more milk if needed.

These sound yummy. I've never seen any with OJ...maybe we can make these for Hailey's class party. I love the scalloped edged hearts. Very cute. Also, I'm new to baking...what's silpat?
